pioneer of the Modern Movement (also known as the International style or simply Modernism) and a gifted architect. He designed some flawless villas, such as the ones here, which despite seeming hard with their cold materials, actually contain warm and inviting interiors. His theories on urbanism, however, were less successful and have spawned many a damaging imitator, particularly his Plan Voisin, the 1920s’ proposal to flatten the historic heart of Paris and replace it with massive tower blocks.
Le Corbusier’s villas were part of a series of ‘machines for living’ that are dotted throughout the Paris suburbs. These two show the architect’s trademark white concrete cubist forms, strip windows and stainless steel furniture. Both of these houses also stand on stilts.
