ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book owes much to philosophers, ministers, theologians, and students who graciously invited me to present some of my ideas in lectures, and to the long discussions that followed. They helped me to see my views in different perspectives and to relate them to the concerns of others.

Anne Freedgood has been, and is, an ideal editor. She has answered every question, giving helpful advice. To cite Paul, her faith in a heretic and in The Faith of a Heretic has been “patient and kind … not arrogant or rude … [and did] not insist on its own way.” But happily, she did not believe all things.
