Introduction
The aim of this publication is to provide a really comprehensive survey of all the essential aspects of physical culture and thus present a complete guide which will enable the beginner to make a successful start in this type of activity. It is also intended to be a useful reference book for clubs and instructors and even champions in the various spheres will profit by studying the methods advocated in this volume.
The theories of weight-lifting have been based on the teachings of Al Murray, the National Coach of the British Amateur Weight Lifters Assoc., who is, in the opinion of the author, the greatest English speaking authority of the technique of weight-lifting. Mr Murray's technical advice has been invaluable in the writing of this book.
The bodybuilding section was based on the training principle of John Carl Grimek, winner of the world's major physique titles, a competitor in the Olympic Games and for many years Associate Editor of the American magazine 'Strength and Health'.
The author is himself a practising authority on the subjects covered. He was World Strand-pulling Champion in 1954 and a consistent British Champion and Record Holder for over 15 years. In weightlifting he has officially held Scottish records and was Scottish Team Manager and Coach at the Empire Games of 1958. As a handbalancer he was best known as the founder of the Spartan Trio and appeared in hundreds of shows throughout the country. He is a qualified physical educationist, having studied at Woolmanhill College of Physical Education and has won awards in a variety of sports. As well as being a regular contributor to publications in Britain and America he frequently appears on T. V. sports and current affairs programmes.
It should be pointed out that although David Webster holds official positions in several sports organisations the views expressed and the methods advocated need not necessarily reflect the policy of the bodies with which he is associated.
