Week 6 Day 3

Sincerity Persuades

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.

Matthew 26:41

Go to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel the tempter’s power,

Your Redeemer’s conflict see,

Watch with him one bitter hour;

Turn not from his griefs away,

Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

While other people might try to persuade with eloquent speech or with logical arguments, Lincoln knew the best way to influence people was through the heart. “If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend,” he recommended to a colleague. “Therein is a drop of honey that catches his heart, which . . . when once gained, you will find but little trouble in convincing his judgment of the justice of your cause.” How do you win friends and influence people? If you can’t seem to get people on board with you, maybe it’s because they don’t feel like you care about them. Try tugging on their hearts, and soon their minds will follow. Lincoln cared about other people. In turn, the country cared about him.
