Week 11 Day 1
If You Can’t Be Honest, Quit
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16:24
Dark and cheerless is the morn,
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day’s return,
Till thy mercy’s beams we see:
Day-spring from on high, be near;
Day-star, in our hearts appear.
Honesty was so important to Lincoln that he believed, when in a contest, it was better to give up than to lie. Acting as a mentor to a young attorney, he said, “Resolve to be honest at all events; and if in your judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer. Choose some other occupation, rather than one in the choosing of which you do, in advance, consent to be a knave.” Finding the truth and living it was paramount to Lincoln. Have you found yourself telling lies to keep your job, your spouse, or your church? If life gets to a point where you have to lie to keep your position, maybe it’s time to quit what you’re doing and refocus your life.
