Week 12 Day 1

Stick to Your Word

Judge not, that ye be not judged. . . . Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Matthew 7:1, 3

Make us by thy transforming grace,

Great Saviour, daily more like thee:

Thy fair example may we trace,

To teach us what we ought to be.

It is one thing to make a promise but quite another to make a promise on behalf of another person. When Lincoln promised that the Union would fight for the cause of freedom, he knew it was a promise made by all and thus important to keep. “I make a point of honor and conscience in all things to stick to my word, especially if others had been induced to act on it,” said Lincoln. Do you guard the vows you have made in behalf of other people? Many times we make promises that affect others in our lives—our spouses, children, or employers. Guard these vows, because if they are broken, you’re not the only one who will get hurt.
