Week 12 Day 2
Happiness Is Action
If thine enemy hunger, feed him: if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:20–21
Thus artists melt the sullen ore of lead,
With heaping coals of fire upon its head;
In the kind warmth the metal learns to glow,
And loose from dross the silver runs below.
Because of his frontier upbringing, Abraham Lincoln was no stranger to work. Growing up in the woods required hard labor simply to survive. His work ethic never left him as an adult, and his resourcefulness caused others around him to work hard too. “Work, work, work, is the main thing,” he said. It’s what made him happy. If you’re depressed, have you tried simply working harder? To Lincoln, work was not only important for survival; it was the very thing that brought happiness. It’s hard to stay focused on what’s wrong with your life when you’re busy taking action.
