Week 16 Day 5
Look at a Person’s Heart
Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16
Teach us, though in a world of sin,
Heaven’s bless’d employment to begin,
To sing our great Redeemer’s praise;
And love his name, and learn his ways.
Outward appearances can be deceiving. It’s what’s inside—one’s motives and character—that matters most. Lincoln observed this throughout life, perhaps because he was so unattractive and unbecoming! He was nothing special to look at, but according to Lincoln, “Common-looking people are the best in the world; that is the reason the Lord makes so many of them.” Despite Lincoln’s awkward appearance, his confidence stood supreme. He looked inward, not outward. Do you value inward or outward appearances more? If you value outward appearances more highly, you may have passed right over Abraham Lincoln if you had the chance to hire him or choose him for a friend. Look inside a person to discover what he or she really is made of.
