Week 20 Day 1
In Victory, Don’t Forget God
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
Psalm 32:1–2
The Saviour smiles! o’er my bless’d soul
New tides of hope tumultuous roll;
Earth has a joy unknown in heaven,
The new-born peace of sin forgiven;
Tears of such pure and deep delight,
Ye angels! never dimm’d your sight.
Although the end of the war could not yet be seen, the Union was piling up victories. Confidence was gaining. But even then Lincoln refused to let the country forget that God was still the one who would give the ultimate victory. “No one is more deeply aware that without his favor our highest wisdom is but as foolishness and that our most strenuous efforts would avail nothing in the shadow of his displeasure,” he said. Small victories can be self-defeating when they make you think you’ve already won the war. Only God gives the ultimate victory. Do you count your victories too soon? Don’t be deceived by false confidences. Stay with God until he gives you victory.
