Week 21 Day 4
Do Not Despair
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
James 1:12
When aught shall tempt my soul to stray
From heavenly wisdom’s narrow way,
To shun the precept’s holy light,
Or quit my hold on Jesus’ might,
May He who felt temptation’s power
Still guard me in that dangerous hour.
Worry and fear ruled the hearts of the country during the Civil War. And it’s no surprise, as almost everyone in the country was affected by the loss of loved ones and a total disruption of lifestyle. Lincoln was aware of the possibility of total despair and consoled the nation by saying, “Yet, under all circumstances, trusting to our Maker, and through his wisdom and beneficence, to the great body of our people, we will not despair, or despond.” How did Lincoln suggest the country survive depression? He encouraged Americans to seek refuge in God. Through God’s sovereign wisdom and goodness, life could be lived without giving up or giving in. Are you worried sick? Find refuge in God. You can cast your cares on him because he cares for you.
