Week 22 Day 3
Extol Virtues
All of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
1 Peter 5:5
Lord, for ever at thy side
May my place and portion be;
Strip me of the robe of pride;
Clothe me with humility.
Lincoln didn’t criticize others very often. He was an encourager, and when he doled out compliments, he focused on virtues. He congratulated others for their honesty and uprightness. When is the last time you received a compliment for your integrity? Today’s culture, rather than valuing virtues, values materialistic things. Lincoln once wrote to a solider, “I believe you to be a brave and skillful soldier, which, of course, I like. You have confidence in yourself, which is a valuable if not an indispensable quality. You are ambitious, which, within reasonable bounds, does good rather than harm.” It is important to value others’ intrinsic worth, their goodness and honor, rather than how much they own or their status in society.
