Week 23 Day 5

Promote Compromise

Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57

Thus strong in the Redeemer’s strength,

Sin, death, and hell we trample down,

Fight the good fight, and win at length,

Through mercy, an eternal crown.

As a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln actually discouraged his clients from going to court. He preferred to settle a case without taking it before a judge and jury. “Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can,” he counseled another lawyer. Lincoln was a reconciler. He promoted compromise and cooperation, helping opposite sides to try another view and to work out their differences. As a young attorney, Lincoln became well-known in his community for avoiding trials. He didn’t view his job as an adversary as much as he did a counselor. As a result, his law practice flourished. People came to him because they knew he could help figure out a way to save, not end, relationships. Are you eager to help other people reconcile their differences?
