Week 24 Day 1
Be Consistent
Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.
Isaiah 1:10
If Providence our comforts shroud,
And dark distresses lower,
Hope paints its rainbow on the cloud,
And grace shines through the shower.
For Abraham Lincoln, values and ethics weren’t something that changed with circumstances. The principles on which he campaigned were the same to which he held after he was elected to office. Once when a supporter asked Lincoln to consider changing his views on the slavery question, Lincoln replied, “It is desired that I shall shift the ground upon which I have been elected. I cannot do it. It would make me appear as if I repented for the crime of having been elected and was anxious to apologize and beg forgiveness.” Do you ever find yourself compromising your convictions, even a little? Sometimes it is tempting to give up a principle in order to impress other people, to make you feel like you’re a part of the crowd. Remember Lincoln’s advice that being wishy-washy on your principles will ultimately make you look less dependable and trustworthy.
