Week 26 Day 2
I Will
I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
2 Timothy 1:12
Beneath his smiles my heart has liv’d,
And part of heaven possess’d;
I thank him for the grace receiv’d,
And trust him for the rest.
Once when giving an order to one of his generals, Lincoln received a reply he didn’t like. The general started to say, “If I can . . . ,” and was sternly interrupted by the president. “By all means, don’t say, ‘If I can’! Say, ‘I will!’” For Lincoln, success was not an “iffy” matter. Lincoln knew that success came only to those with perseverance and willpower. As freedom and justice hung in the balance, there was no room in Lincoln’s vocabulary for “if.” He had to win the war, and anyone who didn’t share his tenacity was disregarded. How is your perseverance? Are your plans contingent upon “ifs” and “buts”? If so, take Lincoln’s approach and tell yourself—and others—that you will achieve your plans.
