Faith Makes Might

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whate’er our hands shall find to do,

To-day may we with zeal pursue;

Seize fleeting moments as they fly,

And live as we would wish to die.

“Let us have faith that right makes might; and in that faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand,” encouraged Lincoln. For President Lincoln, the war would be won not on military prowess, but on faith. Lincoln believed that truth would prevail. He believed in the biblical portent that the Union’s faith would heal the country. Do you have the faith to endure? Like Lincoln, you may not feel like you have the resources to persevere. You may feel like you’re sure to lose. For Lincoln, though, all that really mattered was to have faith. The most important thing was to believe.
