Week 29 Day 2
Do unto Others, Even Adversaries
The righteous shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
Job 17:9
The righteous, bless’d with light divine,
Shall prosper on their way;
Brighter and brighter still shall shine,
To glory’s perfect day.
It’s easy to deal with friends in a kindhearted manner. It’s easy to forgive a friend. But for those whom you don’t like—your enemies—it’s a little harder. According to Lincoln, though, it’s all the same. “I don’t want to be unjustly accused of dealing illiberally or unfairly with an adversary, either in court or in a political canvass or anywhere else,” he said. “I would despise myself if I supposed myself ready to deal less liberally with an adversary than I was willing to be treated myself.” The issue is not friend or enemy. It’s about you and how you would like to be treated. To live by the golden rule, sometimes you have to put yourself in your enemy’s shoes. Look at things from your enemy’s perspective. Then treat him or her as you would want to be treated.
