Week 30 Day 3

Judge Not

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Hebrews 3:12

How oft, deceived by self and pride,

Has my weak heart been turn’d aside;

And, Jonah-like, has fled from thee,

Till thou hast look’d again on me!

Abraham Lincoln used biblical lessons once when his wife, Mary, scolded him for not being tough enough on the Confederacy. She told him he was too sympathetic and compassionate. She wanted swift and strict punishment. Lincoln retorted, quietly but sternly, with the words of Jesus, “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” Lincoln was not so confident in the goodness of the Union as to think he could pass judgment on those who didn’t agree. He knew his own faults, how the Union had let God down in many other ways too. He wasn’t about to treat the Confederacy as if he were perfect, so he leaned on the Bible’s advice to let God do the judging. Are you quick to judge? Or is someone telling you to be a stronger judge? The best advice is Lincoln’s. Let God do the judging.
