Week 30 Day 4
On Greed
Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, Oh LORD, according unto thy word.
Psalm 119:65
Since first the maze of life I trod,
Hast thou not hedged about my way,
My worldly vain designs withstood,
And robb’d my passions of their prey?
Thrice happy loss, which makes me see
My happiness alone in thee!
President Lincoln once warned America not to be too self-indulgent. As the country grew and began to prosper, he noticed less moderation and more greed. Materialism prevailed over generosity. Abraham Lincoln believed America had grown too proud as it flourished. “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown; but we have forgotten God,” he wrote. Those words could as easily be written today as in 1864. The more we get, the more we covet. The more we acquire, the less of God we think we need.
