Week 30 Day 5

Too Proud to Pray

We have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

Hebrews 12:9

Oh let my trembling soul be still,

While darkness veils this mortal eye,

And wait thy wise, thy holy will

Wrapp’d yet in tears and mystery:

I cannot, Lord, thy purpose see,

Yet all is well—since ruled by thee.

They say success breeds success. But sometimes too much success breeds feelings of self-sufficiency and self-reliance. Instead of relying on God, our success can make us feel independent of God and we begin to rely on our own strength. Abraham Lincoln warned, “Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us.” Lincoln knew who is sovereign. There is no such thing as an independent person. All are reliant on God, and those who become too proud to pray are often the first to fall.
