Week 31 Day 1
Pray for God’s Mercy
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work.
Titus 3:1
Lord, thou, hast bid thy people pray
For all that bear the sovereign sway,
Who as thy servants reign;
Rulers, and governors, and powers—
Behold, in faith we pray for ours;
Nor let us plead in vain.
“And whereas, when our own beloved country, once, by the blessing of God, united, prosperous, and happy, is now afflicted with faction and civil war, it is peculiarly fit for us to recognize the hand of God in this terrible visitation, and in sorrowful remembrance of our own faults and crimes as a nation and as individuals, to humble ourselves before Him, and to pray for His mercy.” When you pray, do you ask for God’s mercy? Many times we ask for God’s favor, or we ask for God to help solve a problem. But it’s probably not very often we ask for his mercy. Instead of asking God to give him victory, Lincoln begged for God’s mercy. He wanted God’s grace to forgive, not his power to win. Pray for God’s mercy.
