Week 34 Day 3
Be Consistent
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25
Oh let me always find a place,
Within the temples of thy grace;
Till God command my last remove,
To dwell in temples made above!
As a political leader, Lincoln often found himself in situations where other people wanted him to change his views. Friends and colleagues would often beg him to alter a policy, change an opinion, or amend a belief. We all face similar pressures in life. People push us to modify our values and way of life. Lincoln always had an easy answer for those who wanted him to change. “No party can command respect which sustains this year what it opposed last,” he said. For Lincoln, taking a stand was all about respect. He refused to run with whims and trends, but instead stood by what he had always believed. While the short-term consequences of his consistency might have seemed unpopular, the long-term results were what might have been expected. Everyone always knew where Abraham Lincoln stood. Can people say the same of you?
