Week 35 Day 5
Be Single-Minded
There shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Revelation 21:27
The soul, from sin for ever free,
Shall mourn its power no more,
But clothed in spotless purity,
Redeeming love adore.
Abraham Lincoln believed the only way for an organization, be it a country or a company, to succeed was for one person to be at the helm. Organizations could not be run by committee, he surmised. “Some single mind must be master, else there will be no agreement in anything,” he said. For Lincoln, this meant two things. First, it meant that to win the war, he must be a strong commander in chief. There would be no winning if he was weak. Second, it meant that the country itself must submit itself to a single mind, that mind being Providence. Lincoln believed God was to be at the helm of the nation and at the helm of each individual life. If not, there would be internal chaos and confusion. No country, no organization, and no person could stand without the governance of a single mind.
