Week 37 Day 3
Admit It When You’re Down
Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
Psalm 63:7
Since thou hast been my help,
To thee my spirit flies;
And on thy watchful providence
My cheerful hope relies.
You’d think Abraham Lincoln never got depressed. A man of so much moderation and calm needn’t get disheartened. On the contrary, however, Lincoln got pretty glum at times. He wrote in his journal, “I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on the earth.” Now that sounds like a depressed man! Today doctors might write him a prescription for making that statement. What helped Lincoln was that he was honest with himself and others in his depression. He didn’t hide it. And by writing about it, he was able to get it off his chest. Of the many lessons we can learn from Lincoln, this one may be the most unexpected. When you get depressed, write about it. Admit it, and then you’ll be better able to climb out.
