Week 37 Day 4
Be Teachable
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Psalm 30:5
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again,
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.
Abraham Lincoln was raised to work a farm, not to read books. Later in life he recalled his upbringing as a constant fight with trees, logs, and grubs. “There was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education,” he said. Young Abe Lincoln attended some schools, but for less than a year altogether. “Still, somehow,” he remembered, “I could read, write, and cipher to the Rule of Three.” How did he learn to read and write? He was teachable. Despite having no formal education, he learned what he could from his surroundings. His teacher was life itself, and he took every opportunity to learn from it. Later in life Lincoln took to the books. He studied the Bible and the classics, and he never missed an opportunity to read the daily news. Lincoln exemplifies the fact that any person can learn with or without a teacher. If you are teachable, you can teach yourself.
