Week 38 Day 3
Owe No Debts
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:24
No righteousness but his we own,
No ransom but his blood alone:
While on the Father’s name we call,
Our faith pleads Christ as all in all.
Lincoln didn’t owe anything to anybody. He didn’t believe in debt. Contrary to how modern culture views debt, Lincoln was morally opposed to it. “I never keep anybody’s money which I collect an hour longer than I can find a chance to turn it over to him,” he said. Lincoln’s aversion to debt was a biblical principle he learned at a very young age and practiced throughout his life. His reasons were simple. He believed indebtedness meant a part of a person was owned by another. It constrained one’s freedom and clouded one’s judgment. It meant another person controlled a part of one’s life. So Lincoln returned money fast. This lesson is one few people would heed today but one to which Lincoln held fast, as did most people of his time.
