Week 38 Day 4
Acknowledge Evil
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Romans 5:10
Let us love, and sing, and wonder;
Let us praise the Saviour’s name:
He has hush’d the law’s loud thunder,
He has quench’d Mount Sinai’s flame:
He has wash’d us with his blood,
He has brought us nigh to God.
To Lincoln, the difference between good and evil was plain. It was plain because God made it plain. There was no gray, just black and white, good and bad. “God did not place good and evil before man, telling him to make his choice,” wrote Lincoln. “On the contrary, he did tell him there was one tree, the fruit of which he should not eat upon pain of certain death.” Sometimes people blur the lines between good and evil in the name of tolerance. Lincoln had little time for this kind of tolerance. He wouldn’t tolerate lesser degrees of justice, half-freedoms, and unequal treatment of others. He simply believed in good and evil. He acknowledged that evil existed, and he fought against it. Would Lincoln’s moral precepts be tolerated today?
