Week 39 Day 2
Respect Your Authorities
Now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Hebrews 11:16
’Tis true, we are but strangers
And sojourners below;
And countless snares and dangers
Surround the path we go:
Though painful and distressing,
Yet there’s a rest above,
And onward we are pressing
To reach that land of love.
It seems like simple advice: Obey the authorities. But all too often it’s neglected. Lincoln knew it was sometimes against man’s nature to obey. Sometimes rebellion rules the hearts of men. So he was always quick to remind his troops to respect their commanders. “When differences arise between officers of the Government, the ranking officer must be obeyed,” he told soldiers in the field. It was a biblical portent, to obey and respect authorities, and it is advice we can take today. Give the authorities in your life, at work or at home, their proper respect. It will make your life simpler and lead to better decisions.
