Week 43 Day 3
Giving Responsibility
If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1
Look up, my soul, with cheerful eye,
See where the great Redeemer stands—
Thy glorious Advocate on high,
With precious incense in his hands.
He sweetens every humble groan,
He recommends each broken prayer;
Recline thy hope on him alone,
Whose power and love forbid despair.
One contributing factor to Lincoln’s success was his handling of subordinates. When they did a good job, he was always generous with compliments. He praised and rewarded them. He also looked for opportunities to give more responsibility. When General Sherman captured Savannah in 1864, Lincoln wrote to him, “Now, the undertaking being a success, the honor is all yours; for I believe none of us went farther than to acquiesce. . . . But what next? I suppose it will be safer if I leave General Grant and yourself to decide.” After paying tribute to Sherman, Lincoln gave him more freedom to make future decisions. Lincoln teaches us here to give credit where credit is due, and also to grant responsibility to those who deserve it. Sherman went on to achieve other victories as Lincoln continued to give him more leeway. Do you give compliments and responsibility?
