Week 47 Day 1
God Gives Strength
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Romans 8:14
Lead us to holiness—the road
That we must take to dwell with God:
Lead us to Christ—the living way,
Nor let us from his pastures stray:
Lead us to God—our final rest,
In his enjoyment to be blest:
Lead us to heaven—the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.
Day after day, night after night, Lincoln led the country through the Civil War. The accompanying stress must have been a heavy burden. The knowledge that he might not survive must have weakened his spirits. On more than one occasion, he alluded to his impending doom and death. Where does one go under those circumstances? “I feel that, under God, in the strength of the arms and wisdom of the heads of these masses, after all, must be my support,” said Lincoln. It was under God and in the strength of God’s people that Lincoln found the support he needed to persevere. It was in the knowledge of God’s lasting love and indomitable will that Lincoln placed his confidence. Only because Lincoln believed so strongly that God’s will would prevail could he maintain his strength and ability to lead the nation.
