Week 47 Day 3

Look at the Heart

They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:5

Let worldly minds the world pursue,

It has no charms for me;

Once I admired its trifles too,

But grace has set me free.

Lincoln was often called upon to make life-and-death decisions during the Civil War. As commander in chief, he had to sign-off on every court martial and on every imprisonment and execution of captured Confederate soldiers. What kind of judge did Lincoln make? Once when deciding whether to imprison a group of men accused of defrauding the federal government, Lincoln had little evidence to go on. All he had were accusations and finger-pointing. So he looked instead at the moral character of the men. “In the absence of a more adequate motive than the evidence discloses, I am wholly unable to believe in the existence of criminal or fraudulent intent on the part of the men of such well-established good character,” he finally decided. These men bore good fruit, and without further evidence, he had no reason to believe they could do otherwise. If you follow Lincoln’s lead, you will not be quick to judge any man or woman who leads a life of integrity.
