Week 47 Day 5
God Compensates for Lack
The love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then we’re all dead: and that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
2 Corinthians 5:14–15
Be all my heart, be all my days,
Devoted to thy single praise;
And let my glad obedience prove
How much I owe, how much I love.
While some of Lincoln’s generals were preoccupied with practical matters of training, weaponry, and war plans, Lincoln sometimes took a more philosophical, or spiritual, approach to the war effort. It wasn’t that he didn’t care for other matters. Indeed, he was involved at every level. But he cared too for the spiritual strength of his soldiers. Once when a general confided to the president that some of the Union troops were underfunded and may not be ready for battle, Lincoln said, “Whatever shall be sincerely, and in God’s name, devised for the good of the soldier and seaman in their hard spheres of duty, can scarcely fail to be blessed.” Lincoln had full confidence that God would compensate for any lack on the part of his troops. Do you lack anything? Call on the name of the Lord, and he will compensate for your lack.
