Don’t Take Them for Granted
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

While Union soldiers on the front lines succeeded in pushing back Confederate troops all the way to Richmond, Virginia, Lincoln’s generals rejoiced. Victory seemed certain, only a matter of time. One night in the Oval Office, President Lincoln reminded his generals not to forget those who gave up the most. “Nor must those whose harder part gives us the cause of rejoicing be overlooked. Their honors must not be parceled out with others,” he said. It was true that the efforts of all men and women in the Union helped to win the war. But Lincoln was careful not to take for granted the sacrifices made on the front lines. Whom do you take for granted?
