Week 48 Day 4
Lean Not on Your Own Understanding
The LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11
If thou art my shield and my sun,
The night is no darkness to me;
And fast as my moments roll on,
They bring me but nearer to thee.
Lincoln sought hard after God’s will concerning the issue of slavery. But the answer didn’t come easily. God didn’t appear to him in a dream or vision. Lincoln was like most people who seek God’s will. He explained, “I hope it will not be irreverent for me to say that if it is probable that God would reveal his will to others on a point so connected with my duty, it might be supposed he would reveal it directly to me; for, unless I am more deceived in myself than I often am, it is my earnest desire to know the will of Providence in this manner. And if I learn what it is, I will do it. These are not, however, the days of miracles, and I suppose it will be granted that I am not to expect a direct revelation.” If you’re waiting for a miraculous endowment of God’s will, maybe you ought to follow Lincoln’s lead. Admit that it may not ever come, but continue to believe God will give you an answer.
