Week 51 Day 2
Be a Light
Ye are the light of the world.
Matthew 5:14
Walk in the light—and thine shall be
A path, though stormy, bright;
For God in love shall dwell with thee—
And God himself is light!
Abraham Lincoln took literally the Bible’s admonition to be the “light of the world.” In a letter, Noah Brooks once wrote of Lincoln, “He said that after he went to the White House, he kept up the habit of daily prayer. Sometimes it was only ten words, but those ten words he had.” Lincoln didn’t hide his belief in God. He didn’t make private his practice to pray and worship God—even in the White House. Lincoln’s openness to pray and to believe in God was a light to the nation during the dark days of the Civil War. Through Lincoln’s example, the country found the strength to endure. Ultimately, it paved the way for freedom and justice to prevail.
