God’s Gift of Scripture

Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Romans 13:7

Our sovereign with thy favour bless;

Stablish the throne in righteousness,

Let wisdom hold the helm:

The counsels of our senate guide,

Let justice in our courts preside,

Rule thou, and bless the realm.

A few months after Mary Lincoln joined the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Illinois, she persuaded her husband to visit the church with her. Abraham Lincoln reportedly took great interest in giving a session lecture there on the Bible. His lecture centered on the gift of God’s Word and how the Bible formed the “moral code” of the nation. “It seems to me,” taught Lincoln, “that nothing short of infinite wisdom could by any possibility have devised and given to man this excellent and perfect moral code. It is suited to men in all conditions of life and inculcates all the duties they owe their Creator, to themselves, and to their fellow man.” The Bible was Lincoln’s primary guide in life. He felt it applied to all of life’s conditions, and he leaned on it heavily during the terrible conditions of the Civil War many years later. What’s the basis for your moral code?
