Week 51 Day 5
Last Words
Let [a man] labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Ephesians 4:28
To thee my very life I owe;
From thee do all my comforts flow;
And every blessing which I need
Must from thy bounteous hand proceed.
On May 4, 1865, a famed Methodist preacher named Matthew Simpson was asked to give the eulogy at the burial of President Abraham Lincoln. Simpson had spent time with Lincoln in the White House, and some historians credit him with inspiring Lincoln to free the slaves. On a brisk spring morning at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, Simpson gave the last word on Lincoln and his faith in God. “This I know,” proclaimed Simpson, “he read the Bible frequently, loved it for its great truths, and he tried to be guided by its precepts. He believed in Christ the Savior of sinners.” Lincoln was remembered not only for his wisdom, leadership, and honesty, but for his love of God and God’s Word. What will be the last word on your life? Will you be remembered for your achievements or your devotion to Christ?
