Week 52 Day 1

The Evidences of Christianity

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Ephesians 4:25

Let those who bear the Christian name

Their holy vows fulfil;

The saints, the followers of the Lamb,

Are men of honour still.

Abraham Lincoln liked to have evidence before he made a decision. His nature was logical and reasoned rather than emotional or intuitive. Perhaps this is why belief in Christianity came slow to Lincoln. He had little tangible, “hard” evidence to go on. It wasn’t until he read the book The Christian Defense by apologist James Smith that he professed his full confidence in the testimony of Jesus. Lincoln took to Smith’s book after the death of Eddie, his second son. The Christian Defense gave a two-way discussion of the New Testament, and Lincoln allegedly enjoyed the text immensely. “I have been reading a work of Dr. Smith on the evidence of Christianity and have heard him preach and converse on the subject,” remarked Lincoln to his brother-in-law, “and am now convinced of the truth of the Christian religion.” Lincoln found the evidence of Christ irrefutable.
