Week 52 Day 2
Be Born Again
To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
Titus 3:2
Bless’d are the men of peaceful life,
Who quench the coals of growing strife,
They shall be called the heirs of bliss,
The sons of God, the sons of peace.
War hero Colonel James F. Jaquess had become a prominent minister at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln befriended Colonel Jaquess there and frequently attended services. One Sunday morning Lincoln came into the church late and took the last remaining chair, near the pulpit. Colonel Jaquess had chosen as his text that morning, “Ye must be born again.” The sermon was reportedly moving and powerful. Lincoln listened intently and later returned to Colonel Jaquess’s quarters to ask him for prayer. That evening Abraham Lincoln invited Christ into his heart. “Now, I have seen persons converted; I have seen hundreds brought to Christ, and if ever a person was converted, Abraham Lincoln was converted that night in my house,” said Jaquess. The Bible asks every person to be born again. Lincoln answered the call. Will you?
