“How are you holding up?” Nick asked, his gaze finding hers again, warming something inside her. “It’s the home stretch.”
She should’ve been relieved. By noon tomorrow this nightmare would be over, but tension threaded through her. “My father-in-law begged me to take the money, keep my job at the firm and just forget everything.” Lori almost kept talking, almost dared to unburden herself of the secret she’d been carrying.
“Of course he did.” Nick clasped her shoulders with a reassuring touch. “Without you, there is no case. I’m sure the people they launder money for are dangerous.”
A shiver raced through her. “Sam told me...there was no way to win. That I was going up against Goliath and they’d do anything to see me silenced. He swore I wouldn’t live long enough to testify.”
