Elmira Prison Camp
Out of 12,121 total prisoners, 2,933 died (highest per capita of any prison camp, North or South). One out of every four prisoners died.
The prison camp was twice as crowded as its original intended capacity.
Every day during the month of December, 1864, fifteen to twenty-five Confederates died.
There was one medical officer for 7,000 prisoners.
Before the problem was resolved, 26,000 gallons of urine were released into Foster’s Pond per day.
In the Civil War, three million fought. Two percent of the entire population (620,000) died.
One-fourth of all Southern men were killed.
