There Is a Cure for Diabetes has been an interesting collective effort over thirty-five years, of input mostly from clients, who have been my main teachers, and of inspiration from the pioneers of the live-foods movement, each illuminating another aspect of the live-food approach to healing diabetes naturally. These people include: David Wolfe, who was personally and directly supportive in the creation of this book; Viktoras Kulvinskas, who specifically offered his insights in the importance of enzyme therapy for diabetes; Brian Clement of Hippocrates Health Institute; and Reverend George Malkmus of Hallelujah Acres. All expressed their experience in confirming the viability of a live-foods approach to diabetes reversal.
Dr. Edmond Bordeaux Szekeley, over a period of thirty years (1940–1970), healed all manner of diseases including diabetes with a live-food diet. Max Gerson, MD, made some of the earliest and best-publicized public healings with live foods, including healing Dr. Albert Schweitzer of diabetes. I also want to acknowledge Paavo Airola, ND, PhD, who shared his insights on healing diabetes. We appreciate the pioneering work of Neal Barnard, MD, the research of T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and the practice of John McDougall, MD, in clinically supporting the efficacy of a plant-sourced diet for diabetes reversal.
To my two inspiring and guiding spiritual teachers, Swami Prakashananda and Swami Muktananda Paramahansa from India, who both had diabetes and showed how it could be managed with a simple vegan diet. With gratitude to my research assistant, David Rainoshek, MA. His research, collaboration, and detailed reference work allowed this book to be accomplished more quickly and thoroughly than I could have done on my own. I also thank him for his addition of the Four Means to Get Your Greens approach to a live-foods diet; and thank David and his colleague John Rose for the Juice Feasting concept, which is a back-up part of the support phase of this program. Katrina Rainoshek, who assisted David and me in research and compilation of materials, and provided nutritional support. The Tree of Life staff, specifically café manager and co-manager Tim and Michela Casey, who put together the diabetic food training program over the last two years, and provided the Rainbow Green Live-Food World Cuisine recipes in Chapter 6.
To my wonderful partner, Shanti Golds-Cousens, whose love and support for this book is greatly appreciated, and who leads the yoga aspect of our 21-Day+ Program both in the U.S. and in Israel. The program in Israel now serves Europe, Greece, Turkey, and the rest of the Middle East. We also want to thank the Tree of Life Israel staff for their tremendous effort in putting together this program in Israel.
With gratitude to the Tree of Life program in the U.S. and the support of Tree of Life physician Helen Ross, MD, who conducted client evaluations for our 21-Day+ Program. Thank you to Nurse Carol Saghir, who helped compile much of the client data.
Finally, the collaborators in the film Raw for 30: Reversing Diabetes Naturally: Mark Perlmutter, who brought the idea of Raw for 30 to me to be done at the Tree of Life and was open to my idea of doing Raw for 30 with diabetics, an inspirational film that has led to this book; Keith Lyons, who provided essential support through the birth of the film; and Michael Bedar, my personal assistant, who helped this process.
To the service of God, who inspired me to write this book and to carry on the teachings of Genesis 1:29 as the spiritual and nutritional blueprint for the healing of diabetes:
“See, I give you every seed-bearing plant that is upon all the earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; they shall be yours for food.”
And the inspiration of God through Moses Rabineau in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 30:19–20:
“I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you, that I have set before thee life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: that thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that you mayest obey God’s voice and cleave to the Divine: for the Divine Presence is thy life and length of days.”
Please note: Nothing in this book is intended to constitute medical advice or treatment. For development of an individualized diet or the use of fasting cycles, it is advised that any person first consult his or her wholistic physician. It is important that he or she remain under the doctor’s supervision throughout any major shift in diet or while fasting.
We have referred to a variety of studies, a few of which have involved animals. In no way does this mean that we endorse the use of animal studies for scientific purposes, and when data were available to illustrate points without using these studies, we have done so. Animal studies, particularly studies in which the animals have been sacrificed, interfere with the peace between the animal world and the human world.
