STITCHES & NOTES

Dtr: (Yarn over) three times, insert hook into stitch or space indicated and pull up a loop, (yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook) four times.

Popcorn: Make 5 dc in one stitch or space, drop loop from hook and insert hook from front to back through top of first stitch in the popcorn then into dropped loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook.

Spike sc: Insert hook into stitch or space one or more rounds below next stitch and pull up a loop to level of current round, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook.

X-Stitch: Skip 2 sc, dtr in next sc, ch 2, dtr in first skipped sc.

Base rnd, each side: Multiple of 4 + 1 + corner sts.

Begin 4 sts to left of corner st.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, *[dc in next st, Popcorn in next st**, dc in next 2 sts] to corner st, (2 dc, Popcorn, 2 dc) in corner st, dc in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with slip st to top of ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, Spike sc into rnd below next 3 sts, *[sc in next Popcorn, Spike sc in rnd below next 3 sts] to 1 st before corner st, sc in next dc, 3 sc in corner st, sc in next dc, Spike sc into rnd below next 3 sts; rep from * around, ending sc in next Popcorn, join with slip st in first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner st, join with slip st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, Spike sc into rnd below each st and 3 sc in each corner st around, join with slip st to first sc, slip st in next sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *[ch 2, X-Stitch, ch 2**, sc in next sc] to 1 st before corner st, ch 3, X-Stitch, ch 3, sc in next sc; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with slip st to first sc.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in next ch-space, *[5 sc in ch-space in center of X-Stitch, skip dtr, sc in next ch-space**, insert hook into same space and pull up a loop, insert hook into next ch-space and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook to sc2tog, sc in same space]** to corner X-Stitch, sc in same space, 5 sc in corner ch-space, skip dtr, 2 sc in next ch-sp, sc2tog in same and next ch-space, sc in same ch-space; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.
