* That the original Muslim population of Vlorë consisted of deported kızılbaş is a fact not recorded in any other source. Yet it helps to explain an otherwise puzzling comment in the travelogue of Evliya Çelebi, who visited the city in 1670 and observed that the young men of Vlorë habitually invoked Ali, and were ‘devoted to the Prophet’s family’ – a code-phrase for strong Shiite tendencies.
