The Para Special Forces, commonly known as "Para SF" or simply "Para Commandos", are a highly respected and feared special forces unit within the Indian Army. This elite unit specializes in high-risk special operations, including operations behind enemy lines, special reconnaissance, hostage rescue, counterinsurgency, and combat in difficult and varied terrain.

The Para SF was initially established in 1966 in response to the need for a force capable of parachuting and special operations. Since then, they have evolved significantly and become an integral part of India's military operations, playing a crucial role in the country's national security and defense.

The selection and training process to join the Para SF is extremely demanding and rigorous. Candidates must pass a series of physical, psychological and technical skills tests designed to assess their stamina, intelligence, tactical skills and ability to operate under pressure. Only the best and most qualified are selected to be part of this elite unit.

Para SF training includes a variety of disciplines and specialized skills, such as advanced hand-to-hand combat techniques, weapons and explosives handling, land and air navigation, survival in various environments, and infiltration and exfiltration tactics. Para SF members are trained to operate in adverse conditions and to adapt quickly to changing battlefield situations.

One of the distinctive features of the Para SF is its ability to conduct air assault and tactical parachuting operations. This capability allows them to rapidly deploy behind enemy lines or into hard-to-reach areas, ensuring surprise and tactical superiority on the battlefield.

The Para SF have participated in numerous successful operations both nationally and internationally. Domestically, they have played a crucial role in counterinsurgency in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, confronting terrorist groups and securing strategic areas. Internationally, they have participated in UN peacekeeping operations and have collaborated closely with special forces from other allied countries in joint exercises and multinational operations.

The unit has also been noted for its ability to operate in high altitude conditions and mountainous terrain, such as in the Himalayan region, where its experience in survival and operations in extreme environments is invaluable.
