The Grupo de Operações Especiais (GOE) of Portugal is an elite unit specialized in special operations within the Portuguese Armed Forces. Founded in 1982, the GOE has been fundamental in national defense and international operations, standing out for its professionalism, advanced tactical capacity and commitment to the country's security.
GOE members are selected from the different branches of the Portuguese Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy and Air Force. Selection is extremely rigorous and focuses on physical fitness, specialized technical skills, leadership, mental toughness and the ability to work under pressure. Only the most trained and motivated soldiers are chosen to be part of this elite unit.
GOE training covers a wide range of specialized skills, including advanced combat techniques, weapons and explosives handling, assault and rescue tactics, infiltration and exfiltration operations, survival in various operational environments, and intelligence skills. GOE members are prepared to operate in any environment, from urban areas to rural and maritime environments, adapting to variable terrain conditions.
The GOE's responsibilities include counterterrorism operations, hostage rescue, tactical intelligence, sabotage, special reconnaissance and support for conventional operations of the Portuguese Armed Forces. In addition, the unit participates in peace missions under the auspices of the United Nations and in multinational operations in collaboration with special forces of other allied countries.
