AUTHOR’S NOTE

IN RESEARCHING THE Amish way of life, I discovered that Amish communities differ from one to another. In fact it would be difficult to find two Amish communities exactly alike.

For instance, there are dialectical differences in the spellings of some words. This is why you may see dawdi (grandfather) also spelled doddy or daudi, depending on the region in question. You may even see a grandfather referred to as da.

There are more substantive differences as well. In some communities, like the one in this story, courting is done at night. In still other communities dinnertime prayers may at times be voiced when a particular praise is offered.

While all Amish communities may share basic beliefs and values, diversity still exists. This diversity makes for a rich culture, and it is my honor to present within these pages some small glimpses into their lifestyle and traditions.
