ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Lawrence LeDuc is professor of political science at the University of Toronto. His publications include Comparing Democracies 3: Elections and Voting in the 21st Century (Sage, 2010), The Politics of Direct Democracy (Broadview, 2003), Absent Mandate: Canadian Electoral Politics in an Era of Restructuring (Gage, 1996), How Voters Change: the 1987 British Election Campaign in Perspective (Oxford, 1990), and Political Choice in Canada (McGraw-Hill Ryerson, 1979, 1980), as well as numerous book chapters and articles on political parties, elections, and voting. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties and Electoral Studies.

Jon H. Pammett is professor of political science at Carleton University in Ottawa. He is co-author of Political Choice in Canada (McGraw-Hill Ryerson, 1979, 1980) and Absent Mandate (Gage, 1984, 1991, 1996). He has edited and contributed to several books about specific Canadian federal elections, the most recent of which is The Canadian Federal Election of 2008 (Dundurn Press, 2009). He has published journal articles on public opinion and voting behaviour in Canada and other countries, and has also worked in the field of political education. His current research involves the reasons for the decline in electoral participation.

Judith I. McKenzie is associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Guelph. She has written Environmental Politics in Canada: Managing the Commons Into the Twenty-First Century (Oxford University Press, 2002) and Pauline Jewett: A Passion for Canada (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 1999). She has also published articles in several journals, including the Journal of Legislative Studies and the International Journal of Environment and Pollution. She is currently working on a project funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, studying urban poverty in Canada.

André Turcotte is assistant professor in Communication at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. He specializes in Image, Politics, and Persuasion and advanced research methods. He has contributed to several books, most recently The Canadian General Election of 2006 (Dundurn Press, 2006) and Elections (Emond Montgomery Publications, 2010). Between 1994 and 2000, Dr. Turcotte was the official pollster of the Reform Party of Canada and its leader, Preston Manning.
