Bibliography
Introduction
The amount of literature and other resources on the history of jazz has expanded greatly in recent years. No longer is it difficult to locate information on the life of major performers, the great big bands, the styles of jazz, or the writings of jazz critics and philosophers. The difficulty today has become selecting which resources among the vast offerings to reference. What is contained below is a sizeable sampling of books and Internet resources that provide worthwhile information and insight. Depending on the reader’s area of study or interest, literature that emphasizes the sociocultural relationship of jazz to the world may be especially beneficial, while to another the specific facts surrounding the development and training of an artist’s musicianship skills may be the priority. In any case, the reader will find resources that provide depth and detail among these sources beyond the basic information the dictionary can provide.
The bibliography listings begin with Reference and General Works and include works on certain time periods in the history, anthologies and encyclopedias, and insights into the life and world of the musician. Thinking in Jazz, by Paul Berliner, provides many insights into the mind of a jazz musician. Included in the text are articles, musical text examples, bibliographies, and interviews from more than 50 significant musicians. The material provides a resource for the novice and the professional musician. Throughout the book, a broad sense of the culture and history of jazz is provided. Stanley Crouch’s Considering Genius is a sizeable compendium of one individual’s perspective on artists and the music from throughout jazz history.
Among the works that provide an extensive overview of the history of jazz, Jazz, by Scott DeVeaux and Gary Giddins, stands out as a significant contribution to the field. Included in the text are listening guides to pieces provided on the accompanying CDs, lists of jazz on film, photographs, lists of musicians by instruments, and more than 500 pages of in-depth historical information on styles, musicians, recordings, and relevant societal information. Leonard Feather’s works continue to be resources consulted by all jazz enthusiasts, and the substantial New Grove Dictionary of Jazz provides a wealth of material on all topics.
A fascinating work on the creative process of improvisation in music, art, and culture is Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art by Stephen Nachmanovitch. The author has presented improvisation workshops worldwide and serves on the board of the Society for Improvised Music. His book examines the improvisational process available that all people possess and the effect and impact it has on each person.
Within this section are also found works on specific recordings or time periods of jazz that add depth to the more general discourses provided on the subject to date. Included in these are works on Miles Davis’ quintet of 1965–1968 written by Keith Waters and Ashley Kahn’s books on the recording sessions and background of Davis’ Kind of Blue and the seminal John Coltrane album A Love Supreme. Richard Williams’ The Blue Moment: Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue and the Remaking of Modern Music is another such example of the high quality of in-depth information now available on specific topics that can enhance the reader’s depth of understanding in particular areas of interest.
It is also useful to provide a listing of sources associated with particular styles and eras of jazz. Those from Early Jazz through contemporary styles are provided in relatively chronological order of their development. In addition to some respected and well-known jazz authors, there are also works by authors who are less known that provide a unique perspective or deeper focus on the topic.
For each subgenre of jazz, additions to the resource base are continually being produced. Karl Koenig’s Jazz in Print (1856–1929): An Anthology of Selected Early Readings in Jazz History provides the reader with a compendium of fascinating insights into Early Jazz as it was developing. In depth and with great value to the scholar is the work by Gene Anderson, The Original Hot Five Recordings of Louis Armstrong, which provides valuable information on what many would consider to be the most significant early recordings in jazz. In recent years, the significant role that Chicago played in the development of jazz has been given specific notice. While William Kenney’s Chicago Jazz: A Cultural History 1904–1930 focuses on the early years of development from a cultural perspective, Gerald Majer (The Velvet Lounge: On Late Chicago Jazz) provides a perspective of recent decades from one who played a part in it. Placing historical anecdotes within a social and political context brings a resonance to the Chicago Jazz experience that is otherwise hard to convey, and Majer accomplishes this well.
Along with the New Orleans and Chicago developments in Early Jazz, Kansas City Jazz played a significant role but is often overlooked. Frank Driggs provides a current discourse on the early days of jazz from the Kansas City perspective in his book, Kansas City Jazz: From Ragtime to Bebop—A History. Venues, significant performers, and the political landscape that helped shape jazz in Kansas City are explored here, providing a valuable resource on an area of jazz development that deserves notice.
In Big Bands, readers may wish to concentrate on any number of the more recent publications that focus on particular bands (or bandleaders) and their history, but Scott Yanow’s Swing (2000) should be on every scholar’s reading list as a prime source for comprehensive information on Swing era bandleaders, performers, records, composers, and arrangers. Yanow then provides a follow-up to his text with Bebop, which is filled with essays, biographies, and reviews, and can be found in the listings under Bebop. His years of writing experience and personal familiarity with the music and musicians provide a valuable resource for any enthusiast. Among the listings in Cool Jazz, Frank Tirro has provided an insightful and thorough look at the influences and attributes of Cool Jazz, using the landmark recording Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis as a focal point. Information on arrangers and composers is included, as well as an accompanying CD of relevant musical examples. Within Avant-Garde/Free Jazz, Music and the Creative Spirit: Innovators in Jazz, Improvisation, and the Avant Garde is highly recommended as a source that provides a worthwhile overview with both breadth and depth on this style of jazz.
Following the extensive list of biographies, the reader will find Jazz and Culture. The connection jazz has had to the culture surrounding it is perhaps the greatest legacy of jazz music. Social and economic struggles and changes are reflected in the development of the music. Within this section, numerous titles on that relationship between jazz and society can be found. Although most of these texts involve social connections jazz has had within the United States, the reader may wish to delve into the impact of jazz on international cultures as well. For example, George McKay’s Circular Breathing: The Cultural Politics of Jazz in Britain provides insight into the connection jazz had in Great Britain since 1943, while Matthew Jordon provides a French perspective in Le Jazz: Jazz and French Cultural Identity.
An area that deserves ongoing research and resultant publication is the role of women in jazz. Though present throughout its history, women have been overlooked to some extent until recent years, in spite of the significant impact many have had. Some Liked It Hot: Jazz Women in Film and Television 1929–1959 is a good place for the reader to start learning about the subject, while recent additional resources on specific female musicians in the form of biography can be found under Specific Biographical. Recommended among these are Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa by Andrea Pinkney and Billie Holiday: Wishing on the Moon by Donald Clarke, both of which are unbiased in the presentation of biographical information. The Internet provides an additional worthwhile source, Women in Jazz (http://jazzwomen.org).
As technology and use of the Internet continue to advance, quality resources available online continue to expand. Among those included in the listings of Internet Resources are sites that feature articles, interviews, photographs, reviews, and video examples. Additionally, sites from countries other than the United States are provided, including Europe Jazz Network, Jazz in Japan, Jazzru: Russian Jazz Central, and the Canadian Jazz Archive Online. An excellent source on the bands and musicians prior to 1930 is the Red Hot Jazz Archive, which has become one of the primary sources for many enthusiasts. Discographies, biographical information, and information on jazz films and bands are all found within the site. PBS Jazz is based on the Ken Burns 10-part documentary video series (Jazz: A Film by Ken Burns) and is filled with information that would add to any reader’s knowledge of the subject. In addition, PBS has developed an associated site intended for children that provides a very basic timeline as well as some biographical information on significant performers (http://pbskids.org/jazz).
