With so many great retailers and artisans out there and more popping up all the time, I couldn’t include all my favorites here—but below are some of the best and most easily accessible sources for plants, supplies, vessels, and more (and the places where I got much of the product for this book). And be sure to look out for local plant swaps and gatherings, and check out plant societies, botanical gardens, and educational centers in your area—they are filled with excellent information and inspiration.
PLANTS & SUPPLIES
If the plant you’ve been ogling isn’t available in your neck of the woods, check out these online retailers to find new green friends. If your seller is reputable (like those recommended below), your plants will arrive in perfect shape; however, if you order plants, make sure you’ll be around when they arrive. Spending more than a few days in a dark box or being left outside in inclement weather isn’t good for them.
Black Jungle Terrarium Supply
blackjungleterrariumsupply.com
This supplier offers a wild and wonderful selection of plants, including carnivorous specimens, as well as LED grow lights in various styles.
Brent and Becky’s Bulbs
Check out this site’s indoor bulbs section for some satisfyingly easy blooms to grow from scratch.
Costa Farms
This company is a wholesaler, meaning consumers can’t buy from them (they sell to plant retailers, so you’ve probably purchased their plants indirectly), but you can learn a lot from their houseplant-focused blog.
Gardener’s Supply Co.
This online garden center has everything but the plants! Pick up potting soil, fertilizer, and extra-large yet lightweight planters.
Kartuz Greenhouse
The go-to spot for all your begonia needs!
Logee’s
This company specializes in fruiting, rare, and tropical plants.
Pistils Nursery
Look to Pistils for hip plants, helpful info, and fine-looking photos to boot.
The Sill
This stylish New York City–based retailer delivers houseplants directly to your door, anywhere in the United States.
VESSELS & PLANT STANDS
Before you go out and buy something new, check out flea markets, garage sales, resale shops, and overstock stores for unconventional vases and hidden gems. Your local hardware store and home goods and design stores (both boutiques and national chains like Pottery Barn and Ikea) are filled with possibilities for vessels, too. Below are some go-to online sources.
Artisans
There is a whole world of talented artisans to explore, including the makers of some of the handcrafted vessels in the book. Search for them online to find out how to get your hands on a piece of their art: All Hands, Aveva Design, Ecoforms, Eric Trine, Esther Pottery, Global Eye Art Collective, Heath Ceramics, Holly Coley, House of Thol, Judy Jackson, Kelly Lamb, Love Fest Fibers, Melanie Abrantes Designs, Michiko Shimada, Modernica, Paige Russell, Pawena, Pseudo Studio, Steel Life, West Perro, and Yonder SF.
Campo de’ Fiori
When you want to bring an old-world garden feel to the indoors, you can’t beat Campo’s mossy terra-cotta pots, wrought-iron plants stands, and handblown glass terrariums.
This online marketplace for makers is a great place to find unique pottery and plant accessories. Shops whose vessels are featured in this book include ArtCraftHome, BrooksideBungalow, CeramicaArtisticaASV, FernandFjord, FreeFolding, IHeartNorwegianWood, OkcinWorkshop, and SaraPaloma.
Ferm Living
A mecca for all things Danish design, including a fantastic collection of minimalist pots and plant stands (found under the heading “Green Living”).
Flying Tiger Copenhagen
Check out this playful store’s ever-rotating collection of lighthearted and colorful pieces, at prices that won’t empty your wallet.
Kaufmann Mercantile
From sleek garden tools to brass cachepots, this place has style to spare.
Modern Sprout
Modern Sprout’s delightful goodies include attractive grow lights, mod moss terrariums, and even seed starters and herb kits.
Need Supply Co.
This clothing and lifestyle brand has a curated collection of out-of-the-ordinary vases and plant stands (look under the “Life” category).
Potted
Whether you’re looking for a succulent wall planter in the shape of California or a colorful hanging vase, this LA-based store has got you covered. They also host workshops and offer DIY tutorials on their blog.
Terrain
Terrain is synonymous with well-made products that bridge the gap between indoors and out. I always end up finding something special from this store, which is a sister company to Anthropologie.
