Over the last twenty years I have seen a lot of pet products. A LOT. Much dog toys. Many bandanas. Wow such collars.
The brands and boutiques listed here are the ones I trust and love. They not only have safe, durable, and stylish pet products; but they consistently impress me with their innovation in developing and creating new products for dogs to love.
What to Look for in Quality Dog Products
• Durable Materials—Look for strong rubber for chew toys, multilayered fabrics or felt wool for plush toys, and natural cotton for rope toys. For beds, look for quality foam fillings and durable outer layers. For collars, leashes, and harnesses, focus on stainless steel or solid brass hardware that won’t tarnish or rust, and supple fabric or leather materials.
• Quality Construction—Look for strong, thick stitching (inversed and Z stitching for toys), strong joinery, and no small pieces that could be easily broken off and ingested.
• Machine washable or easily hand washable.
• Nontoxic—Try to avoid BPAs, PVC, phthalates, and unsafe dyes—they can be just as harmful to our pets as they are to us. For grooming products opt for natural products with no parabens, sulphates, or artificial dyes and fragrances.
• Tested to meet health and safety standards.
• Innovative and unique designs that provide comfort and/or enrichment for your dog. Pet products should be useful, fun, and stylish.
Pro Tip!
Seen that dog collar or toy you’ve lusted after now has a knock off version at your local big box store? Tread carefully, dog mama. While cheaper versions of your fave dog products may look almost identical, there’s a few problems with purchasing them for your pupper.
First, they’re often cheaper because they use lower-quality materials and construction in comparison to the originals, meaning their durability and safety can be compromised (unless you want a dog toy that’s going to fall apart in your dog’s mouth in a week’s time?).
Secondly, by buying the copycat design you’re forgetting to support the original creators. If we, as dog owners, don’t support the brands that are creating original, quality pet products, these brands won’t be able to compete and could very well die out. Leaving us with no more cute new designs or innovative products.
So, if you see a high-quality dog product on Instagram or in a pet store and then see a cheaper knock-off version elsewhere, for the sake of the original designer and your dog, choose the higher-quality one.
